Chilgap

Chilgap mountain is about 561 meters. It also
features a lush forest above sea level, and has
many high and low peaks and valleys. It was designated
as a provincial park on 6th of March in 1973, its
size is about 32.542?. It is located in 4 Myeons
and is famous for its summit, 99valleys, Chilgap
mountain villa(featuring the statue of Choi ik-hyun,
monument of Chilgap mountain Song), Cheonjang-ho,
Janggok temple, Jeonghye temple, natural resort,
Dorimsaji, Duryunsong. There are four prominent
season's Mt. Chilgap. In the spring, azalea and
cherry blossoms cover the mountains, in the summer
the lush forest offers a place to rest in nature.
In autumn it is noted for its colorful leaves and
in the winter the beautiful snowy scenery gives
visitors the feeling of what it must be like to
step into heaven. All four seasons show the visitors
unique charm and make it one of the most celebrated
mountains in Korea. There are 7 climbing paths,
which have unique characteristics and give climbers
a diverse choice. An increasing number of tourist
are being lured to Mt. Chilgap. It is noted in
the popular song "Chilgapsan", This
song is widely known to this nation and many other
countries in the world. |

Silla period and through 1000
years it was repaired several times. It locates in
the luxurious forest of Mt. Chilgap showing its decent
and mysterious figure embracing 1000year. It has
many unique and magnificent cultural properties such
as ; "Iron statue of seated Yaksayeora buddha
on the stone prop" , national treasure No.58,
; "Buddhism portrait of Maitreya",national
treasure No. 162, 181 respectatively, ;"Iron
statue of seated Buddha on the stone prop" ,
treasure No. 174, ;"Golden statue of seated
Buddha", treasure No. 337, ;"Seolseondang" cultural
asset No.273, especially it has two upper and lower
Daeungjeon differently discipline temple. Many buddhist
and tourist come to see the exquisite national treasures,
and 1000 year-old temple itself. |

Usan
Seong |

Usanseong is a kind of castle,
designated as historical monument No. 81 by the Chungcheongnam-do
province. It was built in Baekje period, stands from
3m to 7m long, and it's size extends 965m from Eupnae-ri
to Byeokcheon-ri along with Mt. U's 2 peaks and valleys.
This castle is made by two stone walls, between which
soils are filled in, and the width of it is 6m. The
stones, used making castle wall, are largely 30cm
x 20cm, 40cm x 20cm in size and the east and north
part of it reveal the original design, which enables
us to guess the development of Baekje period's constructing
castle skill. There are three gates inside of castle.
Usanseong locates near the downtown of Cheongyang
and have "Stone statue of three standing buddha(treasure
No. 197)" and "Three-story stone pagoda(cultural
property data No.148)." It is visited by many
tourist as walking coures and resting places. |

Story Stone Pagoda |

This Pagoda, designated as Treasure
No.18, is considered as stone pagoda of once flourished
temple of Goryeo period, judged by its structure
and style. Considering from having this big pagoda,
the temple would have been an enormous one. Especially,
while the first floor is huge, the second and above
other floors diminish in size, therefore it displays
well balanced figure and magnificent scene just like
a rocket is ready for taking off. |

Jicheon

Jicheon-Gugok, snake-stream just
like a beautiful oriental painting. This place is
called Jicheon Gugok, which means 9 turn stream in
Jicheon. It comes from Mt Chilgap, go through "o-ul
hacheon", "Jakcheon", "jicheon", "Geumgangcheon" making
its sharp turn 9 times. The scenery of this stream
is magnificent with all its peculiar stone and sharp
turns. "kkachinae" and watermill park" are
famous for summer picnic area because the speed of
water flowing is low and water is not so deep here. |

Jeong
Hye Temple |

This temple is unknown when it
was actually built. But the "Dongkook-yoji-sungnam"says,
it was constructed by Hyekam, National Buddhist monk
in AD 840, the second year of the 46th king munseong
of Silla period. From this book we can guess there
was a temple before Goryeo period. In 1907 this temple
was burnt down, but the Wolpa, buddhist monk, reconstruct
this temple and it remains so far. Threre is a great
signboard,"Jeonghyesa temple", written
by "O se-chang" here. It is considered
having had many sub-hermitages but only "Hyeo-rim-am", "Seok-gul-am", "Seo-jeon-am" remain
nowadays. |

This shrine, designated as Cultural
property data No.152, was built in 1914 in the meaning
of honoring Choi ik-hyun's fight against Japanese
Imperialism and the spirit of independence. "Myeon-am,
his pen name, Choi ik-hyeon fought against Japanese
Imperialism and caught by Japanese soldier, tortured
in Daema island. He refused eating Japanese food
and died in honor from starvation. It displays his
portraits, tablet, and his own article also. In this
Shrine, we can honor his brave spirit and loyalty
to his country. This place shows visitors a terrific
look with the U-mok reservoir, which is in front
of this shrine. |

This cemetery is in Darakgol,
Nongam-ri, Hawsung-myeon. These victims were Catholics
in the period of Dae won-Gun's servere persecution
on Catholics. Relatives of victims strole their dead
bodies through the night and buried them here. It
is called Jul-mudeom(which means Linear tombs), because
several bodies were buried one after another in one
tomb. It is not known the number of the buried bodies,
victim names, and how they were persecuted. But there
are 37 corpses, buried by family, and judging there
are some remains of 10 lost small neighborhood in
this Darak-gol, we can guess that the whole neighborhood,
where Catholics lived together, in this town are
burnt down for persecution. This Darakgol is the
born place of "Choi yang-op", the second
priest in korean history, who studied Catholics aboard
with the first priest "Kim dae-kon". It
is believed that they hid from the eye of persecution
and sought the town of Catholics, walking several
miles a day, doing missionary work. Concerned visitors
as Catholics as well as Catholics visit here as the
sacred ground of korean Catholics. |

Mt.Chilgap

This resort area was constructed
in 1990 as a natural woodland of an area of 70ha
for pollution-stricken city dwellers to rest in clean
environment featuring thick forest and fresh air.
There are 7 cabin huts, able to accommodate 100 people
totally, 4 bungalows, 2 camping areas, convention
house, observation tower, 2 shelters, 35 benches,
golden grass park, walking route, natural health
club, 2 swimming pool, 2 parking lots in this area.
Family visitors can have a good time in the "studying
natural area" with their children and group
visitors can use the "golden grass park" for
their group activities. |

Cheonjang-Ho |

This lake site along the country
route No.36 in the east slope of Mt.Chilgap. It was
constructed from 1972 to 1979 to be used as an agricultural
reservoir. The scenery of fog and clouds with the
low slope of Mt.Chilgap is magnificent. Especially,
there is a small Jeongja(korean style cabin), overlooking
this lake. It is famous for clean and still water
and attracts many fisherman for many smelts caught
here in the spring time. |
